Pokémon GO players: how to avoid free PokéCoins and promo code scams

Pokémon GO is still hugely popular, so scammers keep using it as bait. Here is how to enjoy the game and keep your account safe.

Published · General consumer guidance

Common traps

  • “Free PokéCoins generator”. Sites that promise unlimited coins usually want your login, a download or a survey. They do not add coins.
  • Fake promo codes. Codes shared in random comments or DMs may lead to phishing pages that copy the real store.
  • Buying accounts or rare Pokémon. Sellers can take the money and reclaim the account; trading accounts can also break the game's rules.
  • Spoofing / GPS apps. Apps that fake your location can contain malware and can get your account banned.

Stay safe in four steps

  1. Redeem codes only on the official Pokémon GO website or in the game.
  2. Never give your Google, Apple or Pokémon Trainer Club password to another site.
  3. Turn on two-step verification for the account you log in with.
  4. Get codes from official Pokémon GO channels, not from strangers.
